RECAP: December EPSTRA Community Meeting at District 2
The purpose of the meeting was to listen to the candidates running for District 2.
The four candidates – Josh Acevedo, Veronica Carbajal, Ben Mendoza, and Judy Gutierrez – are seeking to replace District 2 Rep. Alexsandra Annello.
Josh Acevedo was part of the EPISD board. This time, he was advocating for the city to buy and develop properties from EPISD. He also emphasized the importance of selecting the right city manager because of past issues. He was the only candidate who committed to extending his term beyond the initial 11 months.
Judy Gutierrez was very clear about what she could bring to the role. She used to work as a 911 operator and supports law enforcement and community policing. She also has experience in the economic development side of the city, which means she understands tax incentives and what the city has been giving away.
The other candidate, Ben Mendoza, was a bit of a mystery. He complained about vacant homes and squatters and said that his first priority would be to address the issue of homelessness and provide them with proper housing. However, he didn’t have any concrete plans, just a lot of complaints. He mentioned being part of the board to remake the city charter as his experience.
Verónica Carbajal wasn’t able to make the meeting
Remember that early voting has started and will continue until Tuesday, December 5. Election day is Saturday, December 9.
